Progressive psychedelic rock enters righteous-fury mode as 八十八ヶ所巡礼 (88kasyo junrei) unleash COLD AND UGLY, issued domestically as 正怒—roughly “Righteous Anger.” Margarette Hiroi’s lyrics convert nihilism into corrective voltage, aiming rage at tyrannical minds, poisonous delusions and the eternally malfunctioning argument that everything was better in the old days. Beneath that philosophical kernel panic, the trio compress bass acrobatics, illegally fast guitar calculations and Kenzooooooooo’s seismic percussion into another gloriously mutant specimen of “Japanese rock.”
The standalone single arrives ahead of the band’s first Nippon Budokan concert on August 18, marking its 20th anniversary.
