Akabane Vulgars on Strong Bypass
Akabane Vulgars on Strong Bypass are a Tokyo garage-punk trio whose sound drags blues, rockabilly and old-school rock ’n’ roll through the wonderfully dirty machinery of punk. Formed in 2005, the remarkable part is that guitarist/vocalist Yumi Uchizono, bassist Miki Uchizono and drummer Kei Sofue are still the original three members more than two decades later. TuneCore Japan categorizes them broadly as Punk / Rock, while the band themselves cite aggressive 1990s Japanese garage rock alongside blues, rockabilly, alternative rock and even hip-hop as ingredients in their musical DNA.
The band’s origin story is almost suspiciously perfect for punk mythology. Miki, inspired by bands including The Clash and Green Day, wanted to start a band in 2005 and recruited former high-school classmate Kei on drums. For the guitarist she did not have to search very far: she recruited her older sister Yumi, whose unusually deep, rough-edged vocal became one of the group’s most identifiable weapons.
And then there is that magnificent name. “Akabane Vulgars on Strong Bypass” does not actually have one secret grand meaning. Yumi has explained that they deliberately wanted a long name that would stand out, while “Vulgars” expressed a desire to distance themselves from mainstream expectations and preserve their own creative independence. That philosophy fits the music rather well: Akabane have never sounded particularly interested in behaving nicely inside genre boxes.
Their international history goes surprisingly deep. SXSW in Austin in 2012 became an important launching point, followed by extensive touring in the United States and performances in the UK, Canada and Australia. They have also developed a particularly interesting Swedish connection through Live at Heart in Örebro and Swedish label Bark At Your Owner. In fact, Swedish music journalist Per Sinding-Larsen singled them out at Live at Heart 2025 for their extremely raw punk sound and its connection to the punk tradition of the 1980s and ’90s.
