Tokyo’s genre-resistant metal outfit DRAGDOWN packs ten tracks into BELLATONIUM, a title that looks suspiciously like something the periodic table would keep under surveillance. Their musical DNA combines metalcore and deathcore foundations with punk and hardcore instincts; vocalist 哀哭 (Aikoku) also identifies kayōkyoku flavours and Middle Eastern scales among the band’s influences. The album brings together TERMINATION, temeritas, Dirge and .scisma, alongside familiar titles from their earlier catalogue. Formed in 2016 and committed to DIY production, DRAGDOWN reaches its tenth anniversary with a useful reminder: genre labels are filing instructions, not compositional commandments.
